I have gone to the gym and trained even when I had fever and was feeling a tad weak. I was feeling like crap sitting at home all day long so I though a little kicking and punching would do me good - and it did. After I got home my body was feeling a lot better.
Ironic, I'm home sick now. I've gone back and forth on this. I used to nurse a cold or flu thinking I would get better sooner. But then I started getting bored and just trained anyway. I found it didn't seem to matter one way or the other. Now I just play it by ear. Right now, I've got a lot of physical aches which is keeping me away more than the cold. I also have a cough, and I don't want to spread the cold either. That's a tough question.
lol Bart, I'm in the same boat as you. I have a cough and my throat is very sore too. I hope I don't get a cold since I have to go out for a party tomorrow. :(
I did some light stretching and shadow boxing today. I might do some sit-ups later tonight (if I feel like it).
I tell my students - "If you're sick - stay at home. Nobody else wants your germs."
When I am sick, I take my own advice (although I'm rarely sick) - and stay home. I may stretch and train with kata in slow motion but nothing strenuous. I like to make sure that I use all my body's resources to get well.
I never seem to get the full impact if I'm sick. I don't know if it's a mental thing and I convince myself that I don't have the energy or I really dont. So now I just stay home.

I really don't like to miss training time; however, when I'm sick or tired (or both) I usually end up staying home. Mainly because I can't really enjoy training when I'm not feeling good.
I train a lot when I am sick.
I usually feel better when I am training when I am sick even though I do not feel 100% at the time.
It is always better than if I am not training and am sick.
I don't try to take any time off due to being sick or injured. If I am contagious though I train at home instead of going to the gym or the dojo.
I know I am young and one of these days, but for now it still works.
I have even competed a few times when I was sick.
The worst time that I was sick was when I flew to New York City in November, 2004 to compete and had a really bad cold and could barely breath out of my nose at all and was up half the night coughing. However, during the competition I just put it out of my mind and focused. The competition turned out great.
Yea I usually feel better when I train at home. I had gone to the gym last time I had fever since it's not contagious. I was feeling weak and sick before entering the gym (didn't have appetite) but after the first 15 minutes of warming up, I was feeling alright and was glad I wasn't sitting at home. My sweat cooled my body down and I could eat when I went home.
In Gichin Funakoshi's book Karate Do My Way of Life he says," If a man runs a temperature practice karate until sweat begins to pour from his body, he will soon find that his temperature has dropped to normal and that his illness has been cured." I tried this a few weeks ago when I was running a temperature, it did not take long to begin sweating and I did feel better while training and even after.
When I started reading this tread I thought about that book and what Gichin Funakishi said and my Sinsei used to say if he came down with a cold he would work as hard as he could burn it out. I never could get it to work but he had luck with it.
