There is another aspect of new style creation that I think most over look today. Martial Arts has a type of legacy in that as every generation passes the next takes it's place. I have taught for commercial schools in the past and if I am correct, ...

Just ordered a copy of Hanshi Bowles' Book "Shuri-Ryu A Path To Enlightenment" and can't wait to see it.
My Sensei is quite strict when she teaches, but she also says she likes to keep in mind that her students also have day jobs where the body had to function properly. :O) I am convinced that even as tough as her classes can be they are nothing like...
When it comes to Okinawan Karate, I have always been amazed at the advertisements that claim to have thousands of years in development. What eventually developed into "Modern Karate" is derived from older traditions, but in reality have only been ...
Wow, Thank you! I have never had the opportunity to study Japanese language; my training was in biblical languages. I will stay in touch about the Kanban.

I assume that the Nunchaku you are endorsing with the shortened manuchi would be used for sport only as that would render then unable to be used for grabbing and certain blocks that involve crossing the left and right side blocking with the manuchi?
Excellent version of Kururunfa in the video selections! I love the intricate circular hand movements of the Goju-Ryu version just before the upward Empi strikes.
As an introduction to this group I hold the rank of 4th Dan in Trias Shorei-Ryu which is related to Goju-Ryu. My instructor also studied with a Goju-Ryu and Aikido instructor whom she calls R. Adino. She trained with Sensei Adino while in Germany ...
My instructor teaches both the Shotokan Hangetsu and the Trias Shorei version to her students. It makes for an interesting comparison. One of her other Yudansha was also a Yudansha in the style of Shito-Ryu and that version is almost identical to ...
My Sensei received two of her Dan ranks from Allen Wheeler. She has discussed the style of Isshin-Ryu with us in detail over the years and has taught many Isshin-Ryu forms to her students. I also trained for a couple years with a gentleman named D...
I would also caution those who cross train in that I also believe one should at some point in there training choose a path to follow. Cross training is great but you must have an established foundation upon which to build with the new information....
I began my martial arts training on February 26, 1986 and except for a few years of college and a couple Sabbaticals I have continued to train since that time. I have trained with Sensei Lewis for about 13 years during which she has had an amazing impact on my life as well as my martial arts.

At 7:59pm on November 10, 2009, John Silvino Soltis said… Thanks Eric we are on the same path headed in the same direction. Again I must state you come from great stock, and are capable of defending your art with knowledge and understanding. I am glad to know that there are young yudansha like yourself who will be able to promote our disipline in it's true form in the future! Rei- Soltis
I must state when I asked this question it was over thirty years ago, so in the evolution of things I consider changes have evovled. I asked the question (what is the difference) because I was studying Shorei-ryu yet my reference manuel was the Shuri Pinnacle of karate. Are you familiar with the early USKA Shorei/Shuri handbook? If not ask Lewis sensei about them and refences used with slash marks between Shorei and Shorei. Over the years I've come to take my Karate as I do my religion with a lot of faith. Please do not take offense to any of my ramblings. I am happy I have you guys out there to throw things around with- Once again, with respect - John S. Soltis
Eric if you go to the lashorei.org site (still under construction)you will find serveral articles there pertaining to Shorei-ryu specifically. Not to add to the confusion, I once asked my sensei what was the difference between Shorei and Shuri he told me "Just the spelling". If you ask Lewis sensei this question she would probably say the same thing. I mention this because it is something I have been asked quite a few times, and I'm presuming you might have this thought also. Again with respect- John S. Soltis
Hey Eric I recognize the KNS patch you are wearing in your new photo. Being a student of the Lewis sensei you are a credit to them. In the past I had serveral communications with both Lawerence and Lorraine sensei regarding the KNS newletter. You come from great stock(the old school)!
Hey Eric, are you going to the seminar in north Asheville on the 5th of December? It is at Carl Wilcox CMA dojo on Merrimon Ave. He is hosting Troy Price, Jeff Rhodes and
Bruce Bethers. It is bound to be really good. I understand that there will be another seminar, featuring the same, in April of next year.
Hello Eric, I see you joined the Shorei-ryu group, well it is a small world I am familiar with
Lorraine Lewis sensei. She belongs to another group I am also a member of(she is the historian for this group). My sensei (Philip Perales )and the Lewis husband and wife team came up together with Master Trias as their sensei. Anyway glad to have you in the group. Anything I can help you with I would be happy to do so. Rei- John S. Soltis
