My name is Erin. I am 25 years old. I have been training in Shuri ryu karate for almost a year now. I just tested for and received my advanced blue belt (7th kyu).
I currently attend Manatee Community College. I will be graduating this May, and I will hopefully be attending Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. My major will be biology.
I LOVE Naihanchi sho! Taezus are ok, I just can't seem to remember the kihons though. I guess just old age kicking in....hahaha I really like the tapes/DVDs from Hanshi Bowles to review the ippons, kihons, taezus and katas.
I think taking time off is usually the best idea. Time to get your perspective straight and to pursue interests (karate, etc.)
Congrats on the promotion! Haven't heard from you in a while. How are things going?
Did you end up moving? ...Changing dojos? What katas are you working on? I'm currently trying to work on Empi Sho and Naihanchi sho. My kids are taking time out after just finishing back to back (spring and fall) soccer seasons. I think they need a break from extracurricular activities.
Are you officially a biology major now? I got a master's in biology before going into med school. If I can ever be of assistance, let me know!
I was wondering about how your school ranks people since you listed yourself as 8th kyu.
This is what Ridgely Abele's www.shurite.com site says:
Ranks
The Shuri-ryu style, like most systems of the martial arts, uses a belt system to designate rank. The appropriate rank is awarded when the student demonstrates a certain level of proficiency when performing the required techniques, kata, etc. The ranking system as spelled out in “The Pinnacle of Karate” by Robert Trias is as follows:
* White (hachikyu)
* Yellow (schichikyu)
* Blue (rokuyu)
* Green (gokyu)
* Purple (yonkyu)
* Brown (sankyu, nikyu, ikkyu)
* Black (shodan (first dan) through judan (tenth dan))
but this is found on Warrior Pages and I think reflects what your school is doing:
Rank:*
(Kyu is a beginner grade)
(Dan is a black belt grade)
*Can vary from school to school 10th Kyu - White Belt
9th Kyu - Yellow Belt
8th Kyu - Blue Belt
7th Kyu - Blue Belt
6th Kyu - Green Belt
5th Kyu - Green Belt
4th Kyu - Purple Belt
3rd Kyu - Brown Belt
2nd Kyu - Brown Belt
1st Kyu - Brown Belt
1st Dan - Black Belt
2nd Dan - Black Belt
3rd Dan - Black Belt
4th Dan - Black Belt
5th Dan - Black Belt
6th Dan - Red & White Belt
7th Dan - Red & White Belt
8th Dan - Red & White Belt
9th Dan - Red & White Belt
10th Dan - Red Belt (denotes head of style)
It seems that there are a lot of different grading systems. It might be a good discussion topic for the Shuri-ryu group.
I was wondering why you list yourself as 8th kyu with a blue belt. I looked on the ISA website and the Shurite website and both list blue belt as 6th kyu.
Thanks for the welcome, Erin. Congrats on Blue Belt! Someone born in '83 can't possibly be 25 already...can you? That means I'm...well, older than dirt. ;-)
