One of our dojo mottos comes to mind for this topic, and in particular your post. To restrain our physical abilities through spiritual attainment.

Most of the time I train no matter how I feel. Usually once I am on the mat I can push through whatever is bothering me. My work schedule can be really rough sometimes (70 hours in 5 days), so I do miss when things get hectic. To offset this, I hit…

My wife and I have been really trying to reuse/recycle everything we can at home. We car pool when we can, even if it means we have to adjust our schedules (or wait around for the other person). I try to donate blood whenever I am able to. I wish t…

If anyone goes, please keep and eye out for anyone from my dojo (Abilene Mixed Martial Arts). I would love any pictures you might be able to get of my dojo-mates.

Number 4 is the hard one for me also. It took my wife driving by the dojo and stopping for me to actually go in. While talking to one instructor, she was signing me up with the other instructor. Continuing to go is also a challenge, some days more s…

I had a great Philippino weapons class last nite working with double Escrima sticks. Things started clicking and my coordination was good. I was able to really get some speed and power with the exercises. Now I need to work on getting the speed, but…

My flexibility is an issue in my classes. Sidekicks any height over the waist are hard for me at this point. I had expected to lose more weight by now, but that isn't happening. I do feel better physically, but I need to get my weight down. Right no…

I usually feel like working one thing over another at the beginning of a class. Of course we usually end up working on the last thing I wanted to work on that day. To be honest, I usually get more out of the class this way. The other day I was hopin…

In this world of schemers and shysters you have to becareful and weigh where your input is coming from, whether it be from the internet or the dojo. Sometimes you need input from a fresh perspective to help you think things through for yourself. I…

I can see the "friendly guy" with lower ranks (the ones that can get scared off), and the instructor getting increasingly "tougher" as ranks increase at our dojo. We have two very different head instructors who have completely different class styles…

It is my understanding that the "idea" of these katas are that you are fighting attackers on a boat, thus you move side to side from your start point, but not forward or backward. Anyone else heard anything like this? Funny, i was just working on N…

I have now started to work with the jo and it is really neat. The sliding maneuvers can be really elegant and effective at moving the jo into position. I expected the strikes to be closer to what I use in Arnis, but they seem to be more related to t…

As a male, I tend to be very self conscious when I am working self-defense grabs with a female partner. It takes a few times of working with a woman for me to become comfortable enough about not offending her. For my Kenpo class I have one woman who…

Biography
I started with Shorei Goju-Ryu karate as a youth, working my way to purple belt in that system. In college I took a semester of Judo and TKD, achiving my yellow belt in TKD. Later in adult life I tried Kenpo and enjoyed it. Now that I have moved to Texas and life has stablized, my wife enrolled me at my current dojo. She knew I wanted to do it, but would not spend the money on myself.

I currently have my yellow belt in Joto-Lo Karate, orange belt in Philippino Combatives, and am a lowly white belt in Kenpo.

Second tournament down.

Yesterday I was in my second tournament, and faired better than in the first. I placed second in forms and 3rd in sparring. My kata should have been better, but the pressure of the tournament got to me. My 3rd in sparring was out of only 3 competitors, but I felt I did alot better this time than at the last tournament. My objective was to not get bulldozed and to control some of the match. I succeeded on both points.
I also got to help score keep for some other sparring and kata divisions, which… Continue

Big month for me

This month has been a very busy one for me martial arts-wise. I completed my first belt test in for my Philippino Combatives class and earned 2 belts in one test. I did smack myself in the head with one of my sticks while doing sinwalis. We are now working on single stick fighting, where as the material for the belt test was double stick.

On June 20th, I competed in my first tournament since I was about 13. It was a blast. I didn't do well in kata or sparring, but it was a rush of adrenaline ge… Continue

First belt test

Yesterday I had my first belt test in Joto-Lo Karate. This was also my first belt test in about 14 years. I had worked myself up pretty bad and was getting stressed as the time for the test came closer. Some of the stress was because I didn't want to look like a fool and embarrass myself, but much of it was that I didn't want to let Shihan Fields down. Like a child who doesn't want to let down his/her parent, I was nervous about letting down the one who took me under his wing.

Once I started on… Continue

Hi Mr. Blaydes,
First thank you for the welcome to the sight. :^) Please just call me "Tae". Everyone else I know on the net does.
I agree with you idea. I teach in street clothes, rearly do we wear a uniform of any kind. When teching self defense it is important to wear regular clothes, to me it better prepares the student for the street, whould they(hopefully they won't), ever need to defend themselves.

Peace,
Tae

Great to have your input. By the way I have a Bi-Polar student who finds his training helps him a lot. Good luck with the grading test.
