That is a great book - I studied it intensively during my Daito-ryu Aikijutsu days (when I was away at college on a semi-"sabbatical" from Tae Kwon Do).
I find it applies very well to weapons carry. I carry a gun and a knife daily, and the sphere...
You really have to be careful with the "Strike first, apologize later" mentality. I had a friend in college use that in a situation once, but it's really hard to apologize when you hit an officer. The officer grabbed his shoulder and spun him arou...
this is something that is heavily stressed at our dojo, but just recently one of our instructors taught a class focusing on redirecting an attack rather than trying to stop it. The principle behind this is that the attacker never gets the sense of...
I started training when I was just a lad under Shihan Linda Cleary, but took a 15 year hiatus to earn my degree in Mechanical Engineering. Since then I have been training for around a year under the guidance of Shihan Donna Judge, along with a great core of Yudansha at the SunCoast Karate Dojo. I'm enjoying all that the martial arts has to offer, and hope that I can continue on my current path.

Regarding your jiu jitsu question.. BJJ generally concentrates on ground techniques and is very competition focused. Conversely, Traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu is not competition oriented and ground techniques are used; however, its not the first thing in one's bag of "tricks." In terms of what Shuri Te Jiu Jitsu is.. its something a few senior Shuri instructors invented to be a companion to Shuri Ryu Karate. Originally, most of the Shuri people who were doing Jiu Jitsu were studying AJKAI Shinto Yoshin Ryu via Hanshi Douglas Gross and Hanshi Steve Roensch. I have no idea what the Shuri Te curriculum currently looks like; however, it probably looks like AJKAI Shinto Yoshin Ryu. If my assumption is correct, its very effective. If you have the opportunity to study either, you should pursue it.

Hey Seth,
Good job on your kicks last night. Keep up the hard work.
Why would Bart care if I was a graduate from UT? If this is a football thing - then it doesn't make any difference. I could care less about football - they could cancel the whole sport tomorrow and I wouldn't know about it for at least 2 years.
