The dreaded "S" word

Meditation, motivation, what next? There are lots of non-definitive, "easy" tests that could be applied to determine if something is really a martial art. You listed two of yours, and that's fine, ...

Creating NEW Martial Arts (Styles)

This makes a lot of sense. In our style we have a title for each rank, just another way of classifying a level attained, nothing special about it. For black belts, 1st - 3rd dan are "Instructor" ra...

Not saying that I accept your premise that meditation should be the litmus test of a true martial art (I don't - I could name a dozen other things that could also be) but: There are different ways...

So true. Er, I mean the whole WTF/ITF thing being misleading, not the "idiot" part...heh. My style is very confused on that point, like many others, I suppose. We do mainly WTF forms at the gup levels, and almost exclusively ITF black belt forms....

Here's a discussion on another site that covers the linkage between Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan forms in great detail. I don't have the background in Shotokan to know if the information is all correct, but on the TKD side, the author has answered a l...

Just re-reading this, and noticed the reference to Ishhin-Ryu. Isn't it interesting that in that style, they have much the same problem(s) that TKD has...it's a relatively new martial art style, with roots that go way back, and their "commercials"...

Yep, I'd say you're wrong about that. I'm just saying it's not an "either/or" situation. I thought it was clear, but just in case (and I'll type this real slow so it can be easily followed): it's a gray area, as I stated above: there may be sport...

I know what you mean. Once you've trained in so many different styles, how can the style you teach be anything but a conglomeration of you and a synthesis of your experience? Just like the old masters, we all learn, adapt, and change to suit our n...

I guess my visceral reaction to the revisionist history so common among the Korean masters (and often, their American followers) is that it's just WRONG to deny the Shotokan Karatedo foundations of Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do. Wrong as in "inaccur...

SheepDog replied to mun3t's discussion 'Guard?' in the group Tae Kwon Do
Remember you're only talking Olympic style fighting here. The guard is generally, but not always, held low to better intercept kicks. The kicks can be very powerful. I have seen knockouts from kicks to the body in Olympic TKD, and this is thru a c...

Many of my fellow Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do stylists are under the mistaken belief, usually fostered by people who have a financial stake in making the art they teach seem "ancient" and mysterious, or in an attempt by the Koreans to distance the...

I know you weren't really talking modern weapons, but uh, yeah, firearms first, blades second, blunt force third, hands/feet fourth. Assuming element of surprise is on the side of the bad guy... Firearms - shotgun first, then revolver or pistol....

SheepDog,

I'm glad you liked the picture. I love these "motivational" posters that you can create on your own....hilarious. The beautiful part about this one is that it's TRUE. No B.S. It just gets right to the point.

I don't think we were arguing with pure anti-2A folks, I just think that they don't fully get it. They have some pre-conceieved ideas but haven't had them tested, nor have they had to really think their logic thru. Oh well, the debate goes on.

Take care and I'll see you on the board later.

SheepDog,

If you can't read the sticker behind my dog, it says, "An Armed Society is a Polite Society".

"Preparedness Has Finally Been Achieved"

Here is another photo that applies to life in general:

SheepDog,

I jumped in late to the gun thread and you did my job for me! Job well done! It never ceases to amaze me how "traditional martial artists" and my "shooting colleagues" have the same individual mindset, but appear to be ships passing in the night??? I don't get it.

Again, thanks for picking up the flag and charging ahead. I'll meet you at the top of the hill:-)

Hi Sheepdog. Just wanted to say it is great having you on WP. Whether or not we agree on anything (and I'm sure we do) you are passionate and active, which is more than we can say for most members. Good for you.
